Shingles – also known as herpes zoster - is a condition that causes a painful rash or blisters on the skin. It is caused by the same virus that causes chicken pox - the varicella-zoster virus. Anyone who has had chicken pox is at risk for herpes zoster, although it is not clear why some people’s skin is affected while others seem to not get the condition even after having chicken pox. Researchers think that when some people get chicken pox, the illness lingers in the nervous system, only to be activated years later as herpes zoster.
The rash caused by herpes zoster and the blisters that form on the skin look like chicken pox, but cause extreme pain and discomfort. Many patients affected by the virus can get some relief for their skin rash by using antiviral drugs or steroid medications. These medications often get rid of herpes zoster in a few weeks, healing the blisters and rash. However, for people whose immune systems are weakened by illness, Herpes zoster is a real problem and can lead to very serious complications. In some people, the skin rash and blisters of herpes zoster can also lead to scarring, especially if medication is not taken or if the area is scratched.
